Welcome
About the Roomba:
When you think of automated vacuums, what is the first name that probably pops into your mind? Roomba. With a catchy name, and the ability to do work that you would otherwise dread doing, its easy to see how over 20 million Roomba’s have been sold worldwide, not to mention its notoriety. With a self-charging station, mapping capabilities, numerous suctions and brushes to optimize cleaning, and now, an app that allows you to control your Roomba from anywhere, the self-cleaning vacuum does’t seem to be going, besides under your tables, anywhere soon.
Within our exploration of the Roomba, we delve into the algorithm in which is moves, its architecture, and its impact on society through our socio-technical diagram. You’ll also learn about why we chose this website layout and our logo, as well as the history behind the self-moving vacuum. Click any link, and you will be easily directed to anywhere on the site.
Why we chose the Roomba:
We chose to focus primarily on the iRobot Roomba for our 506 Fundamentals of Technology project because of its interesting position within the socio-technicalality of society. With a ever evolving tech world, we as society are becoming seemingly dependent on using technology in our everyday life. Where some people see technology as ruining society and the relationships people form with each other, we see it as an opportunity. The Roomba gives back to people these relationships, and the time they would other wise spend cleaning their home. It allows for working moms to turn the Roomba on from their phone while watching their kids at soccer practice and typing up a brief. It allows students to work at the library and other on-campus jobs without having to worry about cleaning when they get home, or spending more money to pay for someone out of their college budget. Most importantly, it gives people time back in their lives that they can be doing important things. Connecting with friends, watching their kids perform, studying with friends on the couch, while the Roomba works. We wanted to study a technology that works to better the lives of its users, one clean at a time.
